There are several reasons you might experience a bouncy car. Whether running over bumps or potholes in the road, or four-wheeling in the mountains, bounce happens; however, if you find that your driving experience is ‘bouncy’ on a regular basis, this could indicate a problem with your shocks or struts. Nobody knows your vehicle better than you, so if you notice that your ride just isn’t as smooth as it once was, bring it to the team at Best Auto of Longmont and let their ASE certified mechanics evaluate your automobile’s suspension system.
Symptoms of failing shocks and/or struts can include more than just a ‘bumpy’ ride. Some other signs that might suggest the need for shock and strut replacement are:
- The “Body Roll” – If you turn left or right and your vehicle feels like it’s leaning over, this is known as the “body roll”. This is not only a good indication that your suspension needs some work, it’s also a big safety concern. If you notice this happening, take your car to check checked out ASAP.
- Nose Diving – When you apply your brakes and the front end of your vehicle seems to point down, this could be a sign that your shocks or struts are bad.
- Squatting – If your front end seems to rise a bit upon acceleration, this is referred to as “squatting”. Bad struts or shocks are typically the culprit.
- Damper Leaks – Hydraulic fluid is stored in a reserve tube that is bolted to the axle. This reserve tube is part of the damper. When seals start to leak, it can affect the function of the shocks. If any leaking is noticed, your suspension needs to be checked and/or repaired.
- Visible Damage – Cuts, dents, or leaks in the seals can be caused by faulty shocks or struts. Uneven tire wear can even be an indication of a failing suspension system. Signs of visible damage should prompt an inspection of the vehicle’s suspension.
